Engaging Engineers – Meet Luke Esser

July 25th, 2011

Getting to know Project Manager Luke Esser

How did you end up working for CJG-Austin?

  • I started working for the Houston office in April of 2005 after a couple of short stints with a couple of other firms.  Thankfully, I was able to transfer to the Austin office at the end of 2007.

Why were you thankful about the move?

  • Well, I grew up in nearby Wimberley, TX and have always loved the Austin vibe!  I enjoy everything Austin has to offer: the food, the concerts, and the active lifestyle.

Sounds like you’re pretty active.  Where can we find you on the weekends?

  • I’ll most likely be on Lake Austin.  For me there’s nothing better than getting out on the water and riding behind a boat whether it be wakeboarding, wakesurfing, or wakeskating!  I also enjoy spending time with friends and family or catching a concert/sporting event.

Anything else we should know about you?

  • Sure.  I just got married to a great woman in February and inherited two great boys aged 8 & 10.  We had a wonderful ceremony on the beach in Zihuatanejo, Mexico.  Now, most of my time is spent keeping up with a couple of hyper boys that never run out of energy!

Construction Complete on Waco’s University High School

June 27th, 2011

Construction is complete on Waco ISD’s New University High School.

CJG Engineers worked alongside PBK Architects to design a new high school for the growing Waco community.  The high school is a 2 story steel structure consisting of 275,000 sqft of classroom space, an 850 seat auditorium, and 30,000 sqft of gymnasium space, including two auxiliary gymnasiums and a competition gymnasium with fixed stadium seating.

Design began in November 2008, and Bartlett-Cocke General Contractors began construction in June 2009. CJG utilized many different designs to address the unique design challenges for the school. Due to highly expansive soils found at the site, the ground floor was designed as a structural 2 way flat concrete slab.  In the auxiliary and competition gyms, to get the clear space required, 115’ long, 76” deep steel joists were utilized. To resist the wind forces, the unique floor plan was split into several parts and designed independently for wind loads. Each of the sections received their own wind braces to resist the lateral loads.

CJG also worked closely with PBK Architects to design the intricate entrances at the main enties, competition gymnasium and auditorium. Rolled steel and multiple levels of support were used to create the elegant cast stone arches and grand appearance.

University High School is on schedule to open for the 2011-2012 academic school year.

Studio 8 with CJG: Working on New Charter School

June 2nd, 2011

Studio 8 Architects and CJG Engineers have teamed together to design the Meridian World School, a charter school to open this fall; CJG is serving as the structural engineer of record.

The school recently signed a lease for 55,000 square feet of the former industrial and flex space at the AmorRon A complex on I-35 in Round Rock. They will begin with 700 new students, grades kindergarten through eighth. The school plans to add a grade each year expanding over five years into 90,000 square feet.

The school will breath new life into an otherwise abandoned space that sat vacant for six years. When complete, it will be a great example of  adaptive reuse of an industrial space into an educational facility.
