Construction is complete on Waco ISD’s New University High School.
CJG Engineers worked alongside PBK Architects to design a new high school for the growing Waco community. The high school is a 2 story steel structure consisting of 275,000 sqft of classroom space, an 850 seat auditorium, and 30,000 sqft of gymnasium space, including two auxiliary gymnasiums and a competition gymnasium with fixed stadium seating.

Design began in November 2008, and Bartlett-Cocke General Contractors began construction in June 2009. CJG utilized many different designs to address the unique design challenges for the school. Due to highly expansive soils found at the site, the ground floor was designed as a structural 2 way flat concrete slab. In the auxiliary and competition gyms, to get the clear space required, 115’ long, 76” deep steel joists were utilized. To resist the wind forces, the unique floor plan was split into several parts and designed independently for wind loads. Each of the sections received their own wind braces to resist the lateral loads.
CJG also worked closely with PBK Architects to design the intricate entrances at the main enties, competition gymnasium and auditorium. Rolled steel and multiple levels of support were used to create the elegant cast stone arches and grand appearance.
University High School is on schedule to open for the 2011-2012 academic school year.
